The Before

After renovating most of our home a couple of years ago, we hit a break and left a few rooms unfinished. The guest bedroom became a catch-all for extra furniture and household items. As we moved into fall, I wanted a cozy project that would produce immediate results, so I focused on this room. My goals were simple: make the space feel bright and airy, keep the palette neutral and soothing, and add a few functional upgrades for guests.

Choosing a Paint Colour

Choosing the right paint color can be surprisingly tricky. For this guest room I wanted a soft neutral that would read warm in the natural light from the large picture window while still feeling bright. I used the online paint selector from SICO to narrow down shades, and it made choosing much easier from home.

We settled on Mushroom Mousse (SICO shade 6185-11) in an eggshell finish, and it’s become my go-to neutral for this house. The color is a linen-like, muted tone that complements warm whites and soft pinks without feeling flat. If you prefer a bit more contrast, the darker sibling Dried Mushrooms (SICO shade 6185-21) offers the same undertone with higher value and stronger depth.

Painting the room was the most transformative step. Once the walls were refreshed, the space immediately felt cohesive and intentional, providing a neutral backdrop for furniture and decor that already existed in our home.

Choosing the Decor

With the paint chosen, I focused on lighting and textiles. I wanted bedside lights that were both attractive and practical, so I chose polished swing-arm wall sconces with white shades. These offer flexible reading light without taking up nightstand space. We opted to use the plug-in version rather than hard-wiring; that made installation quick and avoided calling an electrician.

To hide the cords neatly, I used rounded cord covers and painted them the same color as the walls. They adhere to the wall and conceal the cord inside, which keeps the look clean and polished. This inexpensive hack is one of my favorite small upgrades because it instantly elevates the finished appearance.

For bedding and soft goods, I mixed warm off-whites, linens, and a hint of soft pink to keep the room gentle and inviting. Layered textures—crisp sheets, a lightweight throw, and a couple of accent pillows—made the bed feel hotel-ready while still homey. A small bedside flower arrangement added a welcoming touch for guests, and a tasteful print over the bed gave the room personality without overwhelming the calm palette.

In the end, a clear plan and a modest budget produced a guest room that feels curated and comfortable. If you’re considering a guest bedroom refresh, start with paint, pick lighting that suits how the room will be used, and finish with layered linens and a few personal details. Small, intentional changes can turn a neglected space into a favorite room in the house.
